NCLEX & Licensure

NCLEX-RN & NCLEX-PN: Your Path to Nursing Licensure.

After completing Calby's 24-week program, you'll sit for either the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN — the national licensing exams required to practice as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurse in any US state. Here's what you need to know.

The two exams

NCLEX-RN vs NCLEX-PN explained.

RN

NCLEX-RN

The licensing exam for Registered Nurses. Administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Uses computer adaptive testing (CAT) — the number of questions adjusts based on your performance, typically ranging from 75 to 145 questions. Passing earns you eligibility to apply for RN licensure in your state.

PN

NCLEX-PN

The licensing exam for Licensed Practical and Vocational Nurses (LPN/LVN). Also administered by NCSBN using CAT format, typically 85 to 150 questions. Passing earns you eligibility to apply for LPN or LVN licensure with your state board of nursing.

How Calby prepares you

Built for exam success from day one.

Every module in Calby's 24-week curriculum is aligned with the NCLEX test plan categories. You won't need to learn entirely new content after the program — the coursework is structured so that mastering the material means you're already preparing for the exam.

NCLEX-aligned content

All modules map directly to the NCSBN Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) test plan, covering clinical judgment, safety, pharmacology, and patient care across all major settings.

Practice questions throughout

Each module includes NCLEX-style practice questions in the same format as the real exam, so you build test-taking familiarity alongside your clinical knowledge.

80% pass threshold

You must score 80% or above to earn your Calby certificate of completion. This threshold is intentionally set to ensure you're exam-ready before you sit for the NCLEX.

Step by step

From program completion to state license.

  1. Step 1

    Complete the 24-week Calby program

Finish all online modules and the one-week clinical with a score of 80% or above to receive your Calby certificate of completion.

  2. Step 2

Apply to your state board of nursing

Submit your licensure application to your state's board of nursing (BON). Requirements vary slightly by state but generally include your program certificate, ID, and application fee.

  3. Step 3

Register for the NCLEX with Pearson VUE

After your state BON approves your application, you'll receive an ATT (Authorization to Test) from Pearson VUE. Schedule your exam at a test center near you.

  4. Step 4

    Pass and receive your license

After passing the NCLEX, your state BON issues your official RN or LVN/LPN license. You're now authorized to practice as a licensed nurse in your state.
